We did what we could, remember us

Whoever stays until the end will tell the story. We did what we could, remember us. These farewell words were written on a plaque at the hospital in Jabalia, Gaza, in October 2023 by Dr. Mahmoud Abu Nujaila. They reached us and remained with us thanks to journalists from Gaza. From May 14 to July 18, 2024, the Trade Union of Croatian Journalists shared illustrations on social media depicting media workers killed in Gaza. Among the slain were reporters, editors, camera people, secretaries, drivers—workers whose efforts create and sustain the media. Our campaign was also joined by the Association of Journalists of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Slovenian Journalists' Union, who shared the illustrations on their own platforms. With this campaign and exhibition, we wish to honor our colleagues who were killed during the genocide in Gaza. They leave us with a legacy—the fight for free journalism, for peace for the people of Palestine and Israel. Since October 7, 2023, at least 42,000 civilians have been killed in Gaza, including at least 180 media workers, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. We have tried to pause and acknowledge these lives lost to violence while continuing to share their dedicated and critical journalistic work. "The occupation wages one massacre after another against Palestinian journalism, trying to silence the witnesses of truth in an attempt to obscure reality and hide the voices and images of massacres against the Palestinian people across all Palestinian territories, especially in the Gaza Strip," write our colleagues from the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate. We continue to create space for the voices of our Palestinian colleagues, remembering those who were killed and the ways in which they were murdered. Equally important to us is preserving everything they lived for and what they testified to and advocated for through their work—resistance to repression, censorship, occupation, and genocide. This exhibition is our small contribution to that cause.
